Preservatives & Antioxidants
Overview
Preservatives and antioxidants help protect a product, but they do so in different ways. Preservatives help prevent the growth of unwanted microorganisms in products that contain water, while antioxidants help slow the oxidation of oils and butters that can lead to changes in scent, colour, or freshness.
At Lovebee, we use natural based preservation systems selected to suit each individual formula. The amount and type used depend on factors such as water content, pH, packaging, and how the product will be used. We never add a preservative simply as a standard ingredient; it must be appropriate for the formula and used at an effective level.
Antioxidants, such as vitamin E, may also be added to help support the stability of oil-based ingredients. Neither preservatives nor antioxidants are shortcuts or unnecessary extras. They are carefully chosen tools that help us create products that remain safe, fresh, and enjoyable throughout their intended shelf life.

Sodium Phytate
Sodium Phytate
Sodium Phytate is a natural, plant-derived salt of phytic acid, commonly sourced from rice bran, grains, and other plant materials. In cosmetics and personal care products, it functions primarily as a chelating agent, binding to trace metal ions that can contribute to oxidation, discoloration, and formula instability. By helping control these reactive metals, Sodium Phytate can improve the overall stability and shelf life of a formulation while also supporting the effectiveness of its preservative system. It is especially valued in naturally formulated products as a plant-derived alternative to conventional synthetic chelating agents. Read more
