Aniseed Hydrosol

INCI Pimpinella Anisum (Anise) Water

Overview

The aromatic water co-produced when aniseed is steam-distilled for its essential oil, carrying a soft, licorice-like scent.

What it is

Aniseed Hydrosol is the water collected when aniseed is steam-distilled for its essential oil. It carries a much softer version of the seed’s characteristic sweet, licorice-like aroma. Aniseed itself has a long history in traditional European and Middle Eastern herbal and culinary use.

Where it comes from and how it’s made

Pimpinella anisum is grown across the Mediterranean and Middle East. When the seeds are steam-distilled to draw out their essential oil, the water that condenses alongside it — carrying a lighter trace of the seed’s aroma — is collected and bottled separately as the hydrosol.

What it does in a formulation

As a light, fragrant water, Aniseed Hydrosol is used in place of some or all of the water in a formula, giving the finished product a soft trace of anise’s sweet, familiar scent.

Why Lovebee uses it

We like working hydrosols like this one into blends that call for something gentler and more nuanced than an essential oil alone. The anise note comes through soft and warm rather than sharp, which makes it a good fit for the cozier, more comforting corners of our lineup.

It’s also a nice way to bring a less expected scent note into a formula — familiar enough to feel warm, but not one every product on the shelf reaches for.

Good to know

  • Has a distinct, recognizable licorice-like scent, which is worth knowing if you’re sensitive to that particular note.
  • Vegan and entirely plant-derived.

Common questions

What does aniseed hydrosol smell like?

A soft, sweet, licorice-like aroma — gentler than the essential oil.

Is aniseed hydrosol the same as anise essential oil?

No. The hydrosol is the water collected during distillation and is much more dilute than the essential oil.

Why use a hydrosol instead of the essential oil?

A hydrosol gives a softer, more subtle version of the scent, which blends more gently alongside other fragrance notes in a product.
